The clinical trials approved on October 30th include a clinical trial for a medical device based on diffuse optical spectroscopy imaging technology. This technology is used to non-invasively visualize and precisely analyze the characteristics of cancerous tissues.
Around cancerous tissues, new blood vessels are often formed, leading to an increase in hemoglobin concentration. Hemoglobin absorbs most light in the ultraviolet and visible light spectrum, but its absorption decreases in the near-infrared range (650nmโ1000nm), allowing light to penetrate deeper into tissues. As a result, cancer tissues with higher hemoglobin concentrations can be effectively distinguished from other tissues.
Based on this principle, diffuse optical spectroscopy imaging technology can distinguish cancerous tissues in the near-infrared range and non-invasively visualize the internal structures and changes of biological tissues. Particularly, it enables accurate diagnosis and image reproduction even in biological tissues with high scattering, thereby enhancing its diagnostic value.
As of now, there have been approximately 6 clinical trials for medical devices based on diffuse optical spectroscopy imaging technology approved since 2021, all of which are focused on breast cancer research.
