JNPMEDI, a clinical research organization (CRO) consulting firm, is taking the lead in the artificial intelligence transformation (AX) of clinical sites. By combining its existing strength in data analysis capabilities with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it reduces the cost and period required for clients' new drug approval. The company also seeks to promote cooperation in the AI field with Naver, which recently joined as an investor.

Founded in 2020, JNPMEDI started with a clinical data management system (CDMS) and expanded its scope to consulting for the entire clinical field. The existence of a CRO is essential for the licensing of drugs and medical devices developed by pharmaceutical companies. A CRO is in charge of procedures such as drafting clinical plan documents, monitoring, and data collection, and coordinates with regulatory agencies.

JNPMEDI has digitized case report forms (CRFs) that were previously handwritten and implemented a system where the process of drawing lots to determine whether to administer a placebo or a test drug, which used to be done by putting them in envelopes, can now be done in a digital environment. By converting clinical procedures to digital, the cost and time burden on clients have been alleviated.

There are also cases where the company helped clients who were experiencing difficulties in clinical trials. WELT, a digital therapeutics company, joined hands with JNPMEDI in 2022 for a clinical trial of electronic medicine for insomnia. WELT had originally received a request for supplementation from domestic regulatory authorities, but it applied JNPMEDI's solution based on decentralized clinical trials. It obtained approval for digital therapeutics while shortening the period through non-face-to-face methods such as verifying the suitability of clinical subjects, electronic consent, and mobile device data collection.

Park Young-yong, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of JNPMEDI, said, "As a result of redesigning the clinical trial and directly linking WELT's electronic medicine with the clinical management system, we found meaningful data," and added, "We support rapid approval for new drug clinical trials based on data." Last year, the company's number of orders more than doubled compared to 2023.

JNPMEDI is staking its life on advancing AI technology. This is because there are infinite changes to be led by AI at clinical sites. A large language model (LLM) can complete drafts of hundreds of pages of documents that must be written during the clinical process, and then medical staff can review them to reduce their workload. By linking hospital electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical data management solutions, it is also possible for AI to verify clinical results and inform of any potential outliers.

Last month, JNPMEDI attracted Naver as a strategic investor (SI). The two companies will promote collaboration centered on AI and CRO. CTO Park explained, "We will be able to utilize our company's capabilities in the clinical support process for medical device companies that Naver has invested in," and "We expect to create synergy effects while utilizing AI technologies like Naver Clova."

Starting from the Seoul office, which opened earlier this month, the company will also speed up its global expansion. In addition to the Songdo headquarters in Incheon, business development (BD) and sales organizations will be placed in Seoul to broaden contact points with clients. Based on this, the plan is to expand the business into the overseas clinical consulting field, such as Southeast Asia.
